Dear
Parent,
This
year, your son or daughter will be participating in
Kids Voting Georgia , an exciting educational
program designed to teach election skills in the classroom
and give students an opportunity to vote at an official
polling place on Election Day. Because an
adult must accompany each elementary and middle school
student to the polls, please plan for you, another
family member or a friend to take your child to vote
on Election Day.
To help prepare your child to vote, it is
recommended that you review and research the candidates
and issues with them prior to the election. National,
state and local election information can be found
in newspapers, magazines and television reports. Election-related
internet sites like the League of Women Voters' site,
( www.lwvga.org
) which allows visitors to view local Voter
Guides, and Project Vote Smart ( www.vote-smart.org
) are good information sources. The Secretary
of State website
(
www.sos.state.ga.us
) is another source for voter information including
candidate lists, ballot questions and up-to-the-minute
results on election night. If you do not have internet
access you can obtain this information by calling
our office at 404-656-2871.
Georgia
typically ranks 48 th in the nation in voter participation
and research has shown that voting is a habit learned
early. By providing quality civics instruction Kids
Voting Georgia is helping to reverse this alarming
trend of non-participation in our state. I encourage
each of you to not only take your child to vote on
Election Day, but to also get registered and exercise
your constitutional right by casting a ballot in the
upcoming election.
As
Georgia's chief elections official, I am pleased to
join Georgia's business and education leaders in supporting
this exceptional program for our state's young people.
Thank you in advance for making the time and effort
necessary for your child to participate.
If
you have any questions about Kids Voting Georgia or
would like to volunteer, please call your local school
superintendent. To request voter registration applications
or to verify your registration, visit the Secretary
of State's website or call your county voter registrar's
office.
